alaska 2010 misc details

Paula and I were talking about Canada and realized how little we knew about it. I found this website and it answered some questions on geography, demographics, culture, economy and even more trivia than necessary. More miles of the Alcan Highway travel is of course thru Canada than Alaska.
I did check Canadian Border Customs (CBSA) site to see entry issues and if pepper spray or a firearm are allowed. The regulations are a bit confusing. It appears that "Bear Spray" is not considered a threat to humans so it is allowed. Personal protection mace/pepper spray against another person is not allowed. I have no plans for a side arm.
Cool Bear Video: The chance encounter with bears could be terrifying or pleasant and docile. These links were sent previous still worth seeing if you missed them. More people are killed on roller blades, bicycles or by horses every year than bears. I will keep concerned but in perspective.  I got two containers of "bear repellant" with holsters for us.
More thoughts on weather. We could encounter cold at 20 degree lows to hot of 80 degree highs with abrupt changes in precipitation. That's part of the trip that will require luck and preparation. September is a pretty darn good travel month as far as I can find out. Of course proximity to coast, inland and elevation are all going to make a dramatic difference. This trip covers a
lot of the north American continent.  I have several light weight rain gear tops/bottoms included in the van supplies in case we want to venture in the rain. Just bring stuff to layer for warmth.
No snow shoes, water/snow/cross country skis, ice skates, roller blades, skate boards, surf boards or scuba equipment, please, HA.
So long for now
